Blacksmiths is a family-friendly beach extending north from the entrance of Lake Macquarie, connecting with a 10.4km sand bight that ends at Redhead.

Home to the Swansea-Belmont Surf Life Saving Club, "Blackies", as it is known to locals, is patrolled September-April.

The beach welcomes almost 160,000 visitors throughout the patrolled season, and in 2020 will again host the NSW Surf Life Saving Championships.

The patrolled section of Blacksmiths is more sheltered than most other beaches in the area, often providing excellent conditions for swimming and fishing.

An adjoining breakwall is used regularly by walkers and cyclists.
