Smart Beaches partner Ocean Live has launched an App that allows users to check predictions and real time warnings at their local beach.

The App was developed with funding provided by the Smart Beaches project. It uses various environmental factors from numerous weather sites to calculate beach hazards such as strong currents, sand banks and UV. It can also alert beach goers to sharks in the area.

To allow for rapidly changing local conditions, lifeguards are able to log in and upgrade or downgrade warnings and add other warnings like blue bottles or lost children.

This is just one application of innovative technology and smart infrastructure that improves beach safety that has come from Smart Beaches. The project is a partnership between Lake Macquarie and Northern Beaches councils and the University of Technology, Sydney.
